Opening day was particularly special for Fernando
In large part because they weren’t stuck at El Paso and
Charlotte. It’s common for baseball’s top prospects to spend a bit of time in the
minors at the beginning of the season http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey ,
but the Padres and White Sox put Tatis and Jimenez on the roster this year, and
they made their big league debuts Thursday. Tatis, a shortstop, had two hits in
San Diego’s win over San Francisco . Jimenez, an outfielder, had a run and an
RBI in Chicago’s loss to Kansas City .Jimenez hit .355 in 55 games at Triple-A
Charlotte last year, and shortly before the start of this season, he signed a
$43 million, six-year contract — a record high for a player under club control
who hadn’t yet appeared in a major league game.So it was no surprise to see
Jimenez in the majors right away. Tatis’ situation was different. Delaying a
player’s service time for a few weeks can delay potential free agency down the
road, and Tatis hadn’t played above Double-A. But instead of sending him to
Triple-A El Paso, the Padres brought him right to the majors.“I told my dad, my
head was in the minor leagues,” Tatis said. “If they sent me down, I was not
surprised. If they called me up, it was going to be a big surprise.”Tatis, who
turned 20 on Jan. 2 Willie Mays
, became the youngest player to start on opening day since
19-year-old Adrian Beltre in 1999. He became the youngest player with a multihit
game on opening day since Robin Yount in 1975.Tatis is ranked as the game’s No.
2 prospect by mlb.com, behind only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The debate about
whether Guerrero should start the season with the Toronto Blue Jays or in the
minors became moot when he went down with a strained left oblique.ALREADY?It
didn’t take long for some position players to take the mound this year. The
circumstances this time: The Dodgers and Diamondbacks played a 13-inning
marathon Friday night that lasted over six hours. On Saturday, Los Angeles beat
Arizona 18-5, with Diamondbacks catcher John Ryan Murphy giving up seven runs in
two innings of relief. Dodgers catcher Russell Martin also pitched, retiring the
side in the ninth on 10 pitches.ALL OR NOTHINGThere’s been plenty of talk over
the past few years about baseball becoming a game of home runs and strikeouts,
and the very early returns in 2019 indicate nothing is changing in that regard.
So far, 23.2 percent of all plate appearances have resulted in a strikeout, and
3.3 percent have resulted in a homer. The numbers last season were 22.3 and
3.0.HIGHLIGHTLorenzo Cain robbed Jose Martinez of a tying home run for the final
out of Milwaukee’s 5-4 win over St. Louis on opening day. Martinez’s pinch-hit
drive nearly cleared the wall in right-center, but Cain brought the ball back,
giving the Brewers the victory.LINE OF THE WEEKWhile much of the focus was on
Bryce Harper and Manny Machado as they began playing for the Phillies and
Padres, Paul Goldschmidt got off to quite a start with the Cardinals.
Goldschmidt, who was traded from Arizona to St. Louis in the offseason, homered
three times in a 9-5 win over Milwaukee on Friday night.Goldschmidt was denied a
chance at a fourth home run when he was intentionally walked in the ninth
inning. PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks will play the final five weeks of the
season against what the numbers suggest will be their most treacherous array of
opponents yet. They shrug at the thought — open their arms, actually. The
Diamondbacks will play 27 of their final 35 games — eight series — against teams
that not only are above .500 and but also appear likely to stay that way.Article
continues below ...On Friday though, the Diamondbacks got off on the wrong foot
in a 6-3 loss to AL West contender Seattle. The Diamondbacks remained one game
ahead in the NL West when Colorado lost at home to surging St. Louis.Arizona is
ready to take on all comers, manager Torey Lovullo suggested.“To be conditioned
to play against the best teams http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authentic-evan-longoria-jersey ,
those are conversations we have had since Day 1 here,” said Lovullo, in his
second season after winning the NL Manager of the Year award when the D-backs
were an NL wild-card team in 2017.“We have to be at our best against the best,
and they (players) want this. This is the greatest time of the year, and these
players in this clubhouse know that. They walked through a very challenging year
last year and came out on the right side of it, but we have more work we have to
do. We know what we want to get to, and it’s right in front of us.”Arizona
left-hander Robbie Ray (3-2, 4.91 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Seattle
left-hander Wade LeBlanc (7-3, 4.04) in the second game of the series
Saturday. The Mariners‘ final five weeks do not appear quite as challenging. They
play seven games against Oakland and three against Houston and the Yankees, but
they also have seven games with Texas, three with Baltimore and two with San
Diego.Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger, traded with Jean Segura from the
Diamondbacks for Taijuan Walker and Ketel Marte before the 2017 season, had
three hits Friday, including his 21st homer.“You always want to do well against
every team, especially a team that traded you,” Haniger said.Haniger Barry Bonds
, who played sparingly with Arizona in 2016, has five homers
in 20 career games at Chase Field.A day after making his first major league
start at third base, Robinson Cano made his third career start at first, all
this season. He could not scoop two one-hop throws when the D-backs scored two
unearned runs in the sixth inning, but the Mariners’ bullpen locked it down from
there as Edwin Diaz recorded his franchise-record 49th save of the season. Ray
was pushed back to start Saturday when Zack Godley was moved ahead to pitch
Friday. Ray will pitch on seven days’ rest after giving up three runs and five
walks in 4 1/3 innings while receiving a no-decision in an 8-3 victory at San
Diego last Friday. Ray is 0-2 with a 5.55 ERA in his last nine starts. He missed
two months with a strained oblique and threw six scoreless innings in his first
game back June 27, but has not been as effective since.“It gives Robbie an extra
day to work on the side with (pitching coach) Mike Butcher,” Lovullo said.
“Robbie is throwing the ball well. He feels great. There is no injury
whatsoever.”Ray has walked 15 in his last 20 innings over four starts. He has
shown flashes of the form that saw him post a 2.89 ERA in a career-year in 2017
but has not found a rhythm this year.“It was all self-inflicted,” Ray said of
his last start.Ray is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in two career starts against Seattle.
He won in Seattle on July 27, 2015, giving up two runs in seven innings while
striking out eight. He has had difficulty at home this season, going 1-1 with a
7.18 ERA in seven starts at Chase Field. He has allowed 13 homers this season,
12 at home in 36 1/3 innings.LeBlanc joined the rotation in May but has scuffled
a bit in August, giving up 15 earned runs in his four starts this month. He gave
up three homers in 4 1/3 innings in an 8-3 loss against Houston on Aug. 1 and
gave up three more in 4 1/3 innings in an 11-1 loss to the Dodgers on Aug.
17.LeBlanc, who spent the first four seasons of his career with San Diego, is
3-3 with a 4.47 ERA in 13 career appearances (nine starts) against Arizona. He
is 1-3 with a 7.20 ERA in six games at Chase Field.
For nearly three years, Johnny Cueto pitched
Foster Jersey
, Ariz. (AP) —a stabbing pain in his right elbow. He won 18 games for San
Francisco in 2016 and started the All-Star game that year dealing with the
discomfort. How he did so, Cueto isn’t sure. And the animated right-hander can
now envision how great it will be once he’s back on the mound and pain-free
following Tommy John reconstructive surgery.“It was a lot for me to deal with.
It was almost three years with pain in the elbow, and strong pain,” said Cueto,
who turns 33 on Friday. “It’s not easy. Last year I started well, but it’s a
mental pain, it’s a pain that felt like someone stuck a knife in my elbow and
stabbed it over and over again. It was unbearable and I don’t know how I was
able to pitch and block the pain.”Cueto arrived in Arizona a couple of days
behind the Giants pitchers and catchers because of personal reasons and had his
physical Thursday. He is scheduled to throw next week for the first time since
his August operation. The Giants’ rotation was plagued by injuries for a second
straight year in 2018 with Cueto, ace lefty Madison Bumgarner and right-hander
Jeff Samardzija all missing significant time.Cueto is down about 20 pounds to
226 thanks to regular meals of salad and fish. Yet he expects to be back at 230
or more once he’s ready to return — hopefully before season’s end around Sept.
1, to which Cueto noted, “If that’s the case I’ll be very happy.”“We would love
to see Johnny start. That means we probably are sitting in a pretty good
position,” manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday following a successful workout
after one rainstorm Tom Seaver
, before it began pouring again. “But we’re not going to do
something that doesn’t make sense with our medical staff and where he’s at.
Because you get through that then you have another offseason to really heal up.
We’ll see where he’s at when we get to August.”Cueto acknowledged he will let
the experts guide him when it comes to a timeline and taking each important step
along the way to come back.“Right now I feel like I’m ready but I know I’m not,”
he said. “My frustration was at the beginning when I couldn’t move the arm to
take a shower, but right now I feel normal and like any other pitcher. I know
what my problem is. The only thing I have to do is take it easy and continue
with my rehab.”He begins the fourth season of a $130 million, six-year contract
he signed before the 2016 season.Cueto did his offseason rehab back home in the
Dominican Republic, where one of his half-dozen horses, Popeye, just died.He
made 25 starts in 2017 then just nine with 53 innings last year before surgery.
On Friday, he plans to throw a plastic ball against a trampoline-like
screen. When appropriate, he will embrace the chance to mentor the young
pitchers, particularly those fr om Latin America who look up to Cueto’s example
in training and his accomplishments on the mound.“I feel really good. I’m
working out and conditioning,” Cueto said. “I’m working hard to return strong to
help my team. … I just want to make sure that my rehab is coming along well,
that’s my main concern right now.” BOSTON (AP) — David Price believes he’s
finally become the pitcher the Boston Red Sox were looking for when they signed
him.Price pitched seven solid innings Paul
Konerko Jersey
, J.D. Martinez hit his major league-leading 38th
homer after Boston jumped to a quick lead and the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay
Rays 5-2 on Saturday night for their 17th victory in 20 games.Signed to a
seven-year, $217 million deal before 2016, the lefty feels as if he’s finally
paying off.“Getting back to myself. I definitely changed a lot of stuff up here
the last 2 Ѕ years,” he said. “To be able to get back to the pitcher that Boston
signed, it’s about time.”Price (13-6) gave up two runs on five hits, striking
out eight, walking two and hitting a batter. He is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his
five starts since the All-Star break. With ace lefty Chris Sale going on the
10-day disabled list Saturday for the second time in nearly three weeks, Price
doesn’t see any additional pressure to fill the void.“I’m making $32 million,”
Price said. “It don’t change what I’m doing. I’ve got enough pressure on me.”And
he’s responded.“We expect him to go deep into games and give us a chance to win
and he’s been doing that,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.Mitch Moreland added
an RBI double during Boston’s four-run first inning. The Red Sox, who own the
majors’ best record, improved to a season-high 52 games over .500 and maintained
their 10 Ѕ-game lead over the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East.C.J.
Cron hit a two-run homer for the Rays. Tampa Bay fell to 4-11 against Boston
this season.Tyler Glasnow (0-1) http://www.whitesoxfanproshop.com/authentic-paul-konerko-jersey ,
making his fourth start since being acquired from Pittsburgh at the non-wavier
trading deadline, gave up five runs, four earned, and three hits. He walked
three and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings.“Very encouraging. The first inning
was such a fluke for him, for all of us. Just a lot of odd things,” Rays manager
Kevin Cash said. “His strike-throwing kind of eluded him for whatever reason,
but he’s got to take a lot of positives from that outing.”The Red Sox took
advantage of Glasnow’s wildness to jump ahead 4-0 in the first. Moreland’s RBI
double made it 1-0 before Martinez and Xander Bogaerts walked to load the bases.
The righty then walked Ian Kinsler, forcing in a run.First baseman Jake Bauers
then fired Brock Holt’s grounder into left field attempting a force at second
and two runs scored, making it 4-0.“Just came in, didn’t feel that great from
warmups to the first inning,” Glasnow said. “Just kind of realized that this is
what I had today and I needed to just go out and compete as hard as I can and
get out of that fix-it mode.”In the third, Martinez homered into Boston’s
bullpen.Cron’s homer cleared the Green Monster and left Fenway Park completely
in the sixth.Craig Kimbrel got the final three outs for his 37th save.HEADS
UPTampa Bay’s Carlos Gomez advanced to third when it was left uncovered on a
popup that was caught between first and the plate in the first inning.“That was
probably my part to go cover third base right there and I didn’t do
that Nellie Fox
,” Price said.NOT HEADS UPWith Kinsler on second and Holt on
first in the first, Kinsler got caught trying to steal third too quickly when
Glasnow stepped off and got him in a rundown. Holt was unsure wh ere to go,
standing between first and second before he was tagged out in a rundown for an
inning-ending double play.Three innings later, Tampa Bay’s Tommy Pham was
doubled off second on a fly ball to the left-field warning track.FRIENDLY
FENWAYThe Red Sox improved their home record to a majors’ best 44-15.TRAINER’S
ROOMRays: C Jesus Sucre missed his fourth straight game with a sore right
wrist.Red Sox: Sale was placed on the DL with mild inflammation in his left
shoulder. “It’s definitely less than it was last time,” Sale said. . LHP Eduardo
Rodriguez (DL since July 15, sprained right ankle) is scheduled to make a rehab
start on Monday.UP NEXTRays: Cash said after the game that RHP Diego Castillo
(3-2, 3.63 ERA) would start Sunday’s series finale.Red Sox: RHP Hector Velazquez
(7-0, 2.77) will take Sale’s turn.
The Milwaukee Brewersand free-agent third baseman
Moustakas reportedly agreed to a one-year deal Sunday.Ken Rosenthal of The
Athletic reported the news Luis Tiant
, noting the contract is pending a physical. Bob Nightengale
ofUSA Todayreported the deal is worth $10 million. This comes after Jon Heyman of
MLB Network noted the Los Angeles Angels, as well as "possibly" the San Diego
Padres and Philadelphia Phillies, were interested in him before his decision to
return to the reigning National League Central champions.Moustakas, 30, split
the 2018 season with the Kansas City Royals and Brewers. He hit .251/.315/.459
with 28 home runs and 95 runs batted in http://www.redsoxproshops.com/authentic-dustin-pedroia-jersey ,
putting up hissecond straight2-plus-WAR season, per FanGraphs.A two-time
All-Star, Moustakas played 934 of his first 988 MLB games with the Royals. He
was an instrumental piece of the team that led Kansas City to its first World
Series title since 1985 but has found a tepid market each of the last two
offseasons. After lingering unsigned into March last year, Moustakas re-signed
with the Royals on a one-year, $6.5 million deal. Kansas City shipped him off to
Milwaukee at the deadline as the Brewers searched for help in the
postseason."Everything happens for a reason Tony
Conigliaro Jersey
," Moustakastold reporters. "I tore my knee up a
couple of years ago, and I got to be there when my daughter was born. (Last)
offseason, I got to see my son born. I was able to sign back with Kansas City; I
got traded (to Milwaukee) and (went to) the postseason again."After never
hitting more than 22 home runs in a season from 2011-2016, Moustakas has hit 66
over the last two years. His increased power has been a major factor in keeping
him effective, and a second straight year of solid numbers likely made
Milwaukeemore comfortable with the commitment. NEW YORK (AP) — Left-hander J.A.
Happ and the New York Yankees have finalized a $34 million http://www.redsoxproshops.com/authentic-dustin-pedroia-jersey ,
two-year contract.Happ gets $17 million in each of the next two seasons, and his
deal includes a $17 million option for 2021 that could become guaranteed is he
has either 27 or more starts as a pitcher in 2020 or 165 or more innings that
year.He is projected to be part of a rotation that includes Luis Severino,
Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and James Paxton, acquired from Seattle in a
trade.A first-time All-Star Steve Pearce
, Happ was acquired from Toronto on July 26 as a summer
rental and went 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA in 11 starts for New York, leaving him 17-6
with a 3.65 ERA for the season. He lost lose at Boston in the AL Division Series
opener, allowing five runs in two innings.Right-hander Parker Bridwell was
designated for assignment to clear a roster spot Monday.
